REPORT HOKURIKU CHUNICHI NEWSPAPER

[Ishikawa] Gontani from Nanao, who exposes his illness and moves forward, confesses his mental disorder and works hard to write lyrics
July 19, 2021 05:00 (Updated July 19, 09:57)
Tatsuya Gontani is working hard to create music with musicians using a computer at his home in Mangyo-cho, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Tatsuya Gonya is working hard to create music with musicians using a computer at his home in Mangyo-cho, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Tatsuya Gontani (47) of Mangyo-cho, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, continues to co-produce CDs with musicians from Japan and abroad. He is devoted to writing lyrics and has co-written over 20 CDs. On the other hand, due to the effects of schizophrenia that he developed during his university days, his sleep is unstable and his physical health continues to deteriorate. Although he was hesitant to open up about his mental illness, he decided to do so in the hope that it would encourage others with similar difficulties. (Yasuhiko Muroki)
Mr. Gontani has been in charge of programs on FM Kahoku (Kahoku City, same prefecture) for over a year and a half in total, and has also been involved in producing CDs at his own expense, promoting and planning performances by foreign artists and performers he has close friendships with.
He lives with his mother on a disability pension of 70,000 yen a month, and works at government offices and facilities for a limited time when there are job openings for people with disabilities. Under such circumstances, he is involved in music activities because he has a rebellious spirit and wants to ``come back no matter what.''
He developed the disease during his time at Toyama University. He was active in a table tennis club and also managed the tournament, but as he was about to graduate, his interpersonal relationships became strained over management. The extreme stress and tension continued for two weeks, causing a mental breakdown. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
He was in and out of the hospital for about three years, and was in a depressed state with severe mood swings. He is estranged from all his friends except for his closest friends. At the government office where I was hired to hire people with disabilities, I felt that the people around me were cold. With monthly visits to the hospital, his symptoms gradually subsided, and at the same time, he began to make more music.
In February of this year, he was able to co-produce a CD with his admired British music producer Stuart Epps. He is indebted to Yoshitaka Aoki (69), a former member of the Sony Music Group, who taught him the basics of music production. He said, ``He connected with various artists with his warm guidance.'' In recent years, Mr. Stuart has focused on nurturing the next generation, and the fact that he was able to spend time with Mr. Gontani through online exchanges during the coronavirus pandemic was also a plus.
Recently, my state of mind has changed. "There is a limit to just having a rebellious spirit. The relationships between people at the time of the onset of the disease are still broken. I hope we can get rid of the grievances even a little, so that there is a possibility that we can become friends again." On the other hand, she is also worried about how she will be perceived if she reveals her disability. Still, she ventures into new territory, saying, ``I'm interested in how my work, which includes her disability, will be evaluated.''
She continues to believe that someday we will understand each other. ``Lyrics on the theme of love and bonds''
"Someday we'll understand each other," she continued to believe. "A world full of smiles/Our present, facing each other here, is the answer to everything/Now we know from our hearts, sharing all of your pain. I’m here…”
This is Mr. Gontani's work ``A World Full of Love'' (excerpt). Gontani's themes include love for loved ones and bonds that overcome difficulties.
Her most famous work is ``THE JOURNEY,'' co-written with Stuart Epps. Mr. Stuart composed the music for the ten songs written by Mr. Gontani. It depicts her thoughts on her father, who passed away three years ago, and her own life as she felt sick in bed. In June, she released the song ``Kimi-machi Yagura'', which is based on ``Bora-machi Yagura'' in Anamizu-cho, Ishikawa Prefecture, where she spent her childhood.
